The purpose of Navigating the American Educational System (NAES) is to increase the academic achievement of Hispanic students by increasing parental proficiency in navigating the American educational system. Through a series of parental seminars, NAES will provide Spanish-speaking parents with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to interact with the school system and to better manage the academic experiences of their children.
This program has been written and developed by
Dr. Lourdes Ferrer. As a Hispanic immigrant, an educator, and a parent, she understands the issues that Hispanic parents face. She has conducted extensive research into the underlying reasons for the lack of achievement on the part of Hispanic students. The insights from that research serve as the basis for this program.
The end goal of the NAES program is improved academic proficiency of Hispanic students. Because Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing minority in the U.S., helping Hispanic students reach academic proficiency is a big step in achieving the goals of the No Child Left Behind Act.
