- Check and update your personal data: ECS, My Profile. Review and update both your Personal Profile and your Educator Profile.
- Review and update your exempt/active status: ECS: Professional Development, "Exemptions".
- Determine your Professional Development requirements for the current 5 year cycle, using ECS: Professional Development, "Requirements".
- Complete your Professional Development Activities.
- Record your professional development activities as you complete them or all at once on ECS: Professional Development "Activities".
- Submit statement that you have completed professional development requirements and are requesting renewal approval. AFTER SEPTEMBER 1 OF THE SCHOOL YEAR IN WHICH YOUR CERTIFICATE WILL EXPIRE. Use ECS: Professional Development "Statement of Assurance"
- Await approval by ROE, ISBE/STCB. Check back on ECS to track approval or return of your Statement of Assurance. Look for “Yes” under ROE and ISBE/STCB.
- Complete your renewal by registering your certificate(s) with a credit card or by mail (personal check) or at ROE (check, cash, or credit card). Your certificate is not renewed and valid until you have paid your registration fee.
If you have not worked as an educator during the past certification cycle, you qualify as Exempt from professional development requirements. Complete steps 1, 2, and 3 above now and then wait until after April 1 of your renewal year, and follow Step 9.
If you were active for part of the cycle and exempt for part of the cycle, follow the above steps for Active certificate holders. You will need to review your exempt status for each certificate and most likely, will need to submit a Statement of Assurance for each certificate.
