DuPage ROE and College of DuPage Host Student Summit for African-American and Latino High School Students

The Third Annual “Black and Tan Student Summit “recently concluded, marking another outstanding day of dialogue, celebration, and education as High School students from across DuPage County gathered on the campus of COD.

 

 

The program focused on multiple topics for the students, providing them to learn about:
  • The character traits that student-leaders must demonstrate
  • The greatest challenges Latinos face today in America
  • The African-American life paradigm split
  • African-American and Latino contributions in our decade
  • The “what” and “why” of “Cinco de Mayo”
  • What other African-American and Latino students have experienced in their pursuit of a quality education
  • Securing resources to further their education after high school graduation (Financial Aid)

 

Key note speakers included: Dr. Rosita Lopez from Northern Illinois University, Roslinda Candiotti , Jose Vera, and Jose Prada, COD Latin Ethnic Awareness Club Members, Dr. Lourdes Ferrer and Mr. Stephen Garlington, DuPage ROE Equity and Excellence Consultants, and Maribel Ruiz, COD Financial Aid Specialist.

 

 

Highlights included special student performances from Willowbrook High School’s Gospel Choir, York High School’s Steel Drum Band, the Iron Dukes, and Addison trail High School’s Latin Dancers. Over 270 students attended this event. (click here for a full copy of the program)
