School Safety Summit
The
DuPage Regional Office of Education and
the DuPage States Attorney’s Office
hosted a School Safety Conference on
October 15 to address the issue of
promoting a safe learning environment in
our schools. Current trends and issues
were presented, and the conference
featured best practices in School
Safety, a panel discussion regarding
school threats and violence, available
resources from DuPage County offices,
and featured a keynote presentation from
the FBI regarding assessing levels of
risk, debunking myths, and knowing how
to recognize a student who may be prone
to violence.
Special Agent Kathy Anton of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation told her
audience that overall there has been a
decline in school violence. Students
have a 1 in one million chance of being
harmed in school. Though school violence
is far from an epidemic, it is a problem
that needs to be taken seriously by all
school personnel.
Illinois House Speaker Tom Cross
provided a legislative update to the
group which included information on a
new law passed by the state that will
require all school districts to
incorporate age-appropriate Internet
safety training to all students in
grades three and above.
“It was gratifying to provide such a
powerful program and see the number of
participants at the conference,” said
Dr. Darlene Ruscitti. “We all know how
devastating the consequences of school
violence can be. Our schools are very
aware of this and are taking every
proactive measure to ensure the safety
of our students.”
